Testing Tileproxy on FSX, a free scenery tool that downloads satelite images to FSX/FS2004 on demand, as opposed to installing retail photographic scenery such as the various VFR packages. Search ’tileproxy’ and visit the developer’s website to find out the finer details if you’re not already familiar with it. Here I am just testing the pros and cons, but given that it’s free the former far outweigh the latter. I’ve tested this on both FSX and FS9 with varying results. FSX seemed to perform better for me, despite being slower (more demanding) and given that it can use far higher resolution scenery tiles. Tileproxy’s developers recommend using the 1.1m/pixel resolution, this seems to work fine for me, although you still get some blurry textures, a common problem with FSX rather than Tileproxy. EDIT: I’ve just tried ‘option 3′ for map data over San Francisco, performance and image reliability was excellent, no reluctant tiles whatsoever. Option 3′s coverage of the UK is almost non-existent though, so I’d been using 1 instead, which is still slow and patchy. In this video I’m testing the experimental 30cm/pixel setting. probably most of the time it manages to display the ground tiles at a comparable resolution to 1.1m/pixel, but fly slow enough (hence the microlight) and the 30cm tiles will certainly show up.
